Dr. Xolani Mkhwanazi serves as Chief Executive Officer of Bateman Africa Limited. Dr. Mkhwanazi has been Chairman of South Africa Operations at BHP Billiton Limited since October 14, 2008. Dr. Mkhwanazi served as Chief Operating Officer of Aluminium Southern Africa at BHP Billiton Limited from February 1, 2005 to October 14, 2008. Dr. Mkhwanazi is responsible for BHP Billiton’s southern African aluminium smelters, Hillside, Bayside and Mozal. More specifically, his role was to maximize the value and potential of these smelters by providing appropriate strategic direction and capitalising on commonalities between them, while also facilitating future aluminium opportunities in the region. A nuclear physicist, Dr. Mkhwanazi played an important role in the restructuring of the electricity supply industry in South Africa. Dr. Mkhwanazi has a PhD from the University of Lancaster in United Kingdom. Furthermore, he is the Chairman of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Trust and sits on the Comverge South Africa Board of Directors.
